Intro

Energy

Unsere Energieversorgung wird zunehmend dezentral und komplex.  Intelligente und vernetzte Energienetze sind der Schlüssel für Stabilität und Effizienz. Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft und gerade auch deren fortschreitende Digitalisierung in allen Sektoren sind abhängig von einer sicheren Energieversorgung mit Strom, Gas und Wärme. Doch die Strukturen der Energieversorgung sind im Wandel. Die Digitalisierung ist der Schlüssel, um auf die Bedürfnisse der Kunden zurechtgeschnittene neue Produkte und Dienstleistungen zu entwickeln und ein effizientes Funktionieren des Energiesystems sicherzustellen. Die Digitalisierung dient insbesondere dazu, Anlagen, Geräte und Komponenten intelligent und automatisiert zu steuern, deren Wartung und Instandhaltung zu optimieren, Nachfrage und Angebot von Energie aufeinander abzustimmen, Infrastrukturen effizienter zu bewirtschaften und Prognosen zu verbessern. Die Daten mit Sensoren breit zu erfassen, zu verknüpfen und als Entscheidungsgrundlage aufzubereiten, erlaubt es Geschäfts- und Kundenprozesse zu automatisieren, sowie die Energieträger Strom, Gas und Wärme miteinander zu vernetzen. Die unterschiedlichen Erzeuger, Speicher, Verteiler und Verbraucher von Energie werden durch den Austausch von Daten, teilweise in Echtzeit, eng miteinander verbunden und können gemeinsam optimiert werden.

Zum aktuellen Stand Bereits heute wird ICT in der Energieversorgung breit eingesetzt: Leitsysteme von Kraftwerken und Netzen, Messdatenverarbeitung sowie Systeme zum Energiemanagement sind Standard. Die neuen Möglichkeiten der Digitalisierung werden in den nächsten Jahren für massive Veränderungen sorgen. Sie bieten sowohl für Unternehmen wie auch für Kunden erhebliche Chancen und haben noch grosses Entwicklungspotenzial. Die Unternehmen bereiten sich darauf vor, die Einführung der notwendigen Mess- und Steuergeräte findet bereits heute statt. So wird der Anteil von digitalen, fernauslesbaren Smart Metern von heute ca. 5% in den nächsten Jahren stark steigen.

Use of digital communication channels

Digitalization makes it possible to develop new products and services tailored to customers’ needs. To be successful in the market, customers must use digital channels to get information on their energy consumption and influence it.

Calculation: The survey measures the proportion of customers who can see their energy consumption in their house or apartment (e.g. via a website or mobile app). The aim is for all customers to be able to monitor their energy consumption. This measurement is weighted 1/6.

The situation is deemed to be critical (acute need for action) if half of those surveyed can monitor their energy consumption. There is assumed to be a need for optimization if a solid three-quarters majority can do so.

Use of smart home solutions

Digitalization makes it possible to develop new products and services tailored to customers’ needs. Smart home solutions enable consumers to manage the energy consumption of buildings, thus utilizing digital energy products and services.

Calculation: The survey shows the proportion of customers who have a smart home solution (e.g. a mobile app to control lighting, heating, and home surveillance). The aim is for all customers to have access to smart home solutions. This measurement is weighted 1/6.

 There is an acute need for action if smart home solutions are still a niche product, that is to say less than 25% of the customers use a solution. There is a need for optimization if more than half use smart home applications.

Proportion of remotely controlled sub-stations, transformer stations and distribution boxes

Digitalization makes it possible for energy companies to structure existing processes to make them more efficient and sustainable. IoT devices can be used to remotely control and monitor sub-stations, transformer stations and distribution boxes. Digitalization enables problems to be detected earlier and be dealt with more quickly by remote control.

Calculation: The survey measures the proportion of energy companies that have remote sub-stations, transformer stations or distribution box. The measured value is weighted on the basis of the size of the company. This measurement is weighted 1/6.

The situation is considered critical (acute need for action) if a minority of systems can be controlled. There is assumed to be a need for optimization if a solid three-quarters majority have this option.

Use of mobile digital maintenance equipment

Digitalization allows existing processes and work to be restructured. By using digital devices maintenance equipment can directly access the latest information from systems. Work orders are automatically distributed to the team which is closest to the job site and available. Google Glass and other devices can be used for efficient performance of tasks.

Calculation: The survey measures the proportion of energy companies that have digital remote maintenance equipment. The measured value is weighted on the basis of the size of the company. This measurement is weighted 1/6. 

The situation is considered critical (acute need for action) if a minority of respondents uses digital maintenance equipment (i.e. less than 25%). There is assumed to be a need for optimization if a solid three-quarters majority have this option.

Digitalization has a major influence on the energy companies and will change the sector over the long term. Customers and partners have new requirements, which the energy companies must meet. The transformation and the use of digitalization must be defined in a digital strategy and implementation planned.

Digital Index Switzerland 2016 - Road to RODI: A framework to drive Return On Digital Investment

Due to the growing importance of digitalization for consumers and companies in Switzerland, Google and Accenture decided to collaborate to ensure a holistic expert view on Swiss companies’ digital readiness. Based on publicly available information only, they investigated the digital maturity and mobile readiness for 100 of Switzerland’s biggest companies. This investigation revealed that, on average, Swiss companies do not prioritize digital initiatives applying outcome-based assessments of value creation potential and customer needs. Therefore, Accenture and Google created a framework based on cross-industry best practice examples that intends to support Switzerland’s companies in driving value creation through digital initiatives.
