Event 20.03.2024

Over the course of two days, participants at the 2024 GovTech Hackathon worked intensively on solutions for a networked Switzerland. Before the participants could get hacking, they had to choose which of the 17 challenges they wanted to work on. They then set about tackling their chosen challenge intensively in teams for the next two days. At the end, the solutions were presented to a jury consisting of representatives from the fields of politics, administration, business and research.

On 8 December, the Federal Council took a number of decisions regarding digital transformation. Firstly, it approved two strategies that deal with the digital future of the Swiss authorities: the Digital Administration Switzerland Strategy and the Digital Federal Administration Strategy. Secondly, the Federal Council adopted the updated Digital Switzerland Strategy for 2024 and defined the new focus themes.

The Digital Switzerland Advisory Committee met on 20 November, with Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider chairing the meeting and Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr in attendance. At the meeting, representatives from politics, business, science and civil society discussed some of the legal hurdles faced in the digital transformation process. A favourable legal framework is essential to furthering the process of digitalisation.

What can we do to promote digital sovereignty? That was the question addressed by the Digital Switzerland Advisory Committee chaired by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis. Digital sovereignty is a focus theme of the Digital Switzerland Strategy.

The Federal Council and Parliament want to drive forward digital transformation in the healthcare sector. At the meeting of the Digital Switzerland Advisory Committee on 17 August, chaired by President Alain Berset and attended by Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr, key players from the healthcare sector exchanged views on the problems of digitalisation and on the planned national DigiSanté programme.

The Federal Chancellery held its first GovTech Innovation Exchange. Participants from the federal administration worked together with Swiss start-ups to develop ideas and proposed solutions to concrete challenges.

At the meetings of the Digital Switzerland Advisory Committee, experts, chaired by a Federal Councillor, discuss a focus theme in depth. The dates for each focus theme have now been set.

The Federal Chancellery held its first public hackathon for the digital transformation of Switzerland on March 2023. Around 130 participants worked on solutions in the area of electronic interfaces. The results are available to the public.

With the GovTech Innovation Exchange, the Swiss Federal Administration is looking for innovative solutions to the current challenges of digital transformation. Various offices of the Federal Administration have submitted a challenge. We are now looking for startups with ideas for solutions to these challenges.

The Federal Chancellery's GovTech Hackathon will take place in Bern on 23 and 24 March 2023. Take the opportunity to build, improve and use electronic interfaces (APIs) of the Swiss administration - and to exchange ideas with developers, experts and interested parties from the administration, business and civil society. The Federal Council approved the new Digital Switzerland Strategy on 16 December 2022. The strategy has been streamlined and now contains annually changing focus themes that are determined by the Federal Council. The focus themes address issues in which the Federal Council sees a particular priority for digital Switzerland. For 2023, the focus themes are: digitalisation-friendly legislation, digitalisation in the health sector and digital sovereignty.
